Because target_route forces Symfony to reload the user from the database after switching, which prevents old session data from being used.

Because target_route makes Symfony keep the same page open in a new tab, so you can compare the admin view and the user view side-by-side.

Because target_route is required for impersonation to work at all; without it, Symfony won’t switch users.

Because the page you’re on might be an admin-only page, and the user you switched to could get a 403 right away. Sending them to a safe page like the homepage avoids that.
